During an appearance at the 2026 CNBC Sport and Boardroom Game Plan Summit in New York, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver explained that the league is still waiting to see where James lands before finalizing some of its most important matchups.
Silver said James’ destination could influence how the NBA builds its opening-week and Christmas Day schedules. Those nationally televised games are traditionally reserved for the league’s biggest teams, players and rivalries.
“So I need him to make a decision,” Silver joked while discussing the situation.

James remains one of the NBA’s biggest attractions, even as he enters the later stages of his career. Wherever he signs would immediately become a major storyline for the upcoming season.
The Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers have all been mentioned as possible destinations. Each option would give the league several potential opening-night and Christmas Day matchups to consider.
A return to Cleveland would create an emotional homecoming narrative, while joining Golden State could pair James with longtime rival Stephen Curry. Miami would reconnect him with a franchise where he won two championships, and Philadelphia could place him alongside another Eastern Conference contender.
LeBron Remains Quiet About His Next Move
James also attended Fanatics Fest but did not reveal which team currently has the advantage in the free-agency race. He indicated that a decision would be coming soon while continuing to keep his plans private.
The four-time NBA champion reportedly informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he would not return for the upcoming season, making him one of the most closely watched free agents in league history.
James is coming off a season in which he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 51.5 percent from the field.
Although he is now 41 years old, his production, popularity and ability to generate national attention continue to make him one of the NBA’s most influential players.
Until James chooses his next team, Silver and the NBA may have to keep several versions of the schedule ready.
