About This Story

Tyrese Haliburton took a shot at recruiting LeBron James to the Indiana Pacers, but the four-time NBA champion’s response made it clear that Indianapolis probably was not high on his free-agency list.

The Full Story

Speaking at Fanatics Fest on Thursday, Haliburton revealed that he contacted James about joining the Pacers. The Indiana star reportedly made his pitch before LeBron informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he planned to leave the organization.

Instead of asking about Indiana’s roster or discussing what a potential deal might look like, LeBron responded with crying-laughing emojis.

Haliburton understood the message immediately.

According to the Pacers guard, that brief exchange marked the end of his attempt to bring James to Indiana.

Haliburton Tried to Make a Major Move

Although LeBron’s response was playful, Haliburton’s recruiting attempt showed that he is thinking big as the Pacers prepare for another season.

Indiana finished the 2025-26 campaign with a disappointing 19-63 record, but that season came under unusual circumstances. Haliburton missed the entire year while recovering from a torn Achilles.

Just one season earlier, the Pacers reached the NBA Finals and pushed the Oklahoma City Thunder to seven games. Haliburton is expected to return to a roster that includes Pascal Siakam and former Los Angeles Clippers center Ivica Zubac.

Adding LeBron would have instantly transformed Indiana into one of the NBA’s most closely watched teams. It also would have given the Pacers another experienced playmaker capable of helping guide a roster that has already shown it can compete deep into the postseason.

Unfortunately for Pacers fans, LeBron’s emoji-filled reply did not sound like the beginning of serious negotiations.

LeBron and Haliburton Already Have a Relationship

Haliburton was not exactly sending a random message to James.

The two previously played together for the United States men’s basketball team, which won a gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics. That relationship may have made Haliburton comfortable enough to reach out directly and test LeBron’s interest.

It also helps explain why James felt comfortable responding with humor instead of delivering a formal rejection.

Haliburton may not have landed his target, but there is nothing wrong with trying to recruit one of the biggest names in basketball.

Where Could LeBron Play Next?

LeBron’s next destination remains one of the NBA’s biggest storylines following his reported decision to leave the Lakers after eight seasons.

His agent, Rich Paul, reportedly displayed a list of 10 possible teams during an appearance on the Game Over podcast. The list included the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs.

The Pacers were noticeably absent.

That does not necessarily confirm where James will play next, but it supports Haliburton’s story that Indiana was not receiving serious consideration.

For now, Pacers fans can appreciate the effort. Haliburton went big-game hunting and attempted to bring one of basketball’s greatest players to Indiana.

LeBron’s laughing emojis may have ended this particular recruitment, but Haliburton’s willingness to make the call shows the type of ambition Indiana will need as it attempts to return to championship contention.
