Authorities identified the suspect as 58-year-old Michael Foster. He was arrested Wednesday evening and charged with murder, manslaughter and 10 counts of criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the death of Julia Anderson.
Police allege that Anderson was shot near the intersection of Murdock and Nereid avenues in the Wakefield section of the Bronx shortly before or around midnight Monday night.
Reports differ slightly on whether Anderson was standing beside her parked Jeep Grand Cherokee or sitting in the driver’s seat when the gunfire began. Authorities said shots were fired from the passenger side of the vehicle, striking her multiple times in the chest or upper body.
Emergency responders transported Anderson to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where she was pronounced dead. Investigators reportedly recovered two shell casings from the scene.
Police Investigating Reported Inheritance Dispute
Police and law-enforcement sources believe the shooting may have been connected to an ongoing disagreement over ownership of a Mount Vernon home that Anderson and Foster had reportedly inherited.
The exact history of the property, the terms of the inheritance and the events that allegedly led to the shooting have not yet been publicly detailed. The reported inheritance dispute remains part of the authorities’ investigation and has not been established in court.
News 12 reported that Foster was Anderson’s uncle and that the two were connected to the same Mount Vernon address, less than a mile from where Anderson was killed in the Bronx.
Members of the NYPD Crime Scene Unit later executed a search warrant at a Mount Vernon property connected to Foster. Investigators were photographed collecting evidence and searching for possible weapons related to Anderson’s death.
Victim Remembered as a Caring and Hardworking Woman
Anderson’s family described her as a hardworking caregiver who assisted adults with developmental disabilities.
She had reportedly completed a night shift at a Wakefield group home and was preparing to return to her Mount Vernon residence when she was attacked. Loved ones said she was approximately one month away from celebrating her 40th birthday.
Her mother, Beverly Patterson, said she became concerned when her daughter failed to arrive home at her usual time.
Anderson’s relatives, friends and coworkers remembered her as a kind and caring person who dedicated her time to helping vulnerable members of the community.
Foster Awaiting Court Proceedings
Foster was taken into custody following an investigation by the NYPD. In addition to murder and manslaughter, the 10 weapons-possession counts suggest investigators may have recovered or identified multiple weapons during the case, although authorities had not publicly released a complete inventory of the evidence at the time of reporting.
The charges against Foster are allegations. He is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
Additional details about the reported inheritance dispute, the evidence recovered during the Mount Vernon search and Foster’s next court appearance are expected to emerge as the case proceeds.
The investigation into Julia Anderson’s death remains ongoing.
